How do I use an existing SDR with ADS-B

The ADSBExchange.com hardware runs very hot. Over time this has degraded the 1090 MHz receiver to the point where it only (poorly) works for 10 mins or so. I have several SDR units, but can I use one of them or do I need to purchase another ADSBExchange.com receiver?

All RTL-SDR’s run hot - it’s just the way they are. The plastic-cased ones don’t feel as hot, because it doesn’t transfer as quickly when you touch them, but they’re still hot inside. You can use any RTL-SDR (the “blog” v4 one may require manual installation of drivers), but most of them don’t have an LNA and filter built in, so won’t perform as well, but you could certainly try and see if it’s more stable at least.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply. I think I’ll just buy another blue ADSB receiver and hope the newer versions are more robust.

I still have my original ADSBx blues from when they first came out and they work fine, reliability is good but there are always a few units that will fail.
